Investigation of Hydrothermal Aging on Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Used in Medium Voltage Cables

This investigation deals with the effect of hydrothermal aging on electrical insulating properties polyvinyl chloride used in medium voltage cables. The evolution dielectric (dielectric loss factor, constant, strength and volume resistivity) as a function time temperature has been studied. After that, mechanical characteristics (elongation at break tensile strength) were also determined. Physico-chemical analysis was performed to highlight structural changes induced by aging. Infrared spectroscopy using Fourier transform (ATR-FTIR) thermogravimetric (TGA-DTA) have performed. results obtained show that factor constant increase gradually temperature, while resistivity decreases. At 100℃, general shape curves giving shows both those decrease. In case 80℃, decreases slightly remains almost time, whereas increase. activation energy varies time. impact material established this study. beginning aging, degradation is mainly due elimination molecular HCl. more advanced stages attributed HCl double bonds formation followed change color. Other consequences like crosslinking swelling samples are noticed.
